Camelia

I'm showing off our beautiful Camelia.  It's been a bit windswept lately but this year it's just laden with blooms.  We took it from my late mother-in-law's (Beatrice Printemps) garden before her house was sold and it took a few years to get going, being traumatised by frost during two bad winters.  For the last two or three years it's been absolutely beautiful.  Our secret ingredient is wood chippings which help to keep the moisture in and the weeds out.  We have a free supply from our log man, Steve, who rents one of our old sheds for his logs.

DUCK UPDATE

Those funny little ducks are still a bit scared of the water.  They stay very close to the edge and only go in if we throw food in for them.  We put them on Duck Island a couple of months ago, and there they stayed.  I thought it was a natural thing for ducks to gravitate towards water but I suppose with us keeping them in the big shed since they were babies didn't help (but at least Mr Fox didn't get them).  They go to the edge of the water but if they get too far away from the island they get into a right flap and a panic and race back to dry land.  Hopefully they will get used to the deep water eventually and go for a good swim.  It would be so much fun for duckies! Oh, we also have a swan.

  1. Beautiful, it must give you so much pleasure just looking at it. Gardens are amazing really aren't they, for just calming your soul. And I am envious of your ducks of course, and Mr Swan too, lucky you. But sad for him/her on their own.....

  2. I do love our Camelia but every year when it comes out, we seem to get gusty winds and it blows some of the lovely flowers off..but it's done really well considering we moved it from another garden. I'm not an expert gardener but I do love pottering. It does make you feel calm doesn't it?

  3. What a lovely post! I don't believe I have been here before, but my memory is not what it used to be (I'm 74) so perhaps I have (been here before). Your camelias are spectacular and your daffodils ain't bad either. Perhaps the ducks fear the swan as much as they fear the water. How strange!

  4. When I saw the title of this post I was looking forward to reading about Prince Charles's wife - all her secrets. Like when she slept with every member of The Saracens rugby team and when she danced naked through The Princess Diana fountains after a night on the lash. Instead, the post was about flowers and water fowl!
