The Dark Side of Glasgow

Clashes in George Square in Glasgow last night

I know my last post was entitled "I Predict a Riot" but I didn't really mean it.  Last night there were violent clashes between the NO and YES voters.  Well, actually the angry mob were shouting sectarian chants and insults and some were doing the Nazi saluting thing.  Some were so young that they wouldn't even know what any of it meant.  I have been away from Glasgow for too long.  I had almost forgotten about that deep rooted religious nonsense that made Glasgow a microcosm of Northern Ireland. It made people who supported one football team attack and beat up someone who supported another football team just because they were wearing the wrong colours (wrong colours = wrong religion). I hated all the Catholic/Protestant stuff when I was young and I have been reminded of it again now and I hate it even more.

So sad to see the dark side of Glasgow being broadcast to the world.

  1. Sad, but maybe not all that surprising? Hopefully it will settle down rather than escalate.

    1. Hi CT. I think it is just a minority of numpties looking for a fight.

  2. When I was at university in Scotland I sometimes went to see football matches and quickly realised that in Glasgow it's tribal with religious chants and blatant bigotry coming from both Celtic and Rangers fans - "UDA all the way! F**k the Pope and the IRA!" I guess you don't get much of that kind of thing in South Cave Molly!

    1. No, it's lovely and peaceful oop our lane in South Cave. I grew up with all that crapola and I could never understand it. I had a wee Saturday job in a chemist in Ibrox and people wouldn't buy anything green - I mean soap, toothbrushes etc. It was fluffing unbelievable. They are all at the shallow end of the gene pool these numpties (on both sides I mean).

    2. I don't like footy but I really like the way there is never any trouble with Hull supporters - it's a real family thing here.

    3. You're right Molly. My family was conceived while watching videos of old Hull City games.

  3. Hi Molly, thanks for following my blog. Word from the street was that there were bussed up EDL folk from as far away as Brighton there to lend a hand. So sad after all the lovely, peaceful street parties in the days before. There are always numpties just looking for an excuse. Xx

    1. Hi M of R. Thanks for dropping in. I think you are right about the thugs being shipped in. My sister thought the same thing. Thankfully, it seems to have calmed down now.

I laughed about you knitting on the train with the suits and their laptops and big-ego electronics encroaching on your space. Just poke them with your sharpest needle - they are probably only playing Candy Crush Saga anyway - ha ha! I will come back and visit soon - I love all the sewing bits and pieces you do.

Best wishes from Carol (real name).
