Lancaster Bombers

Today we were lucky enough to witness the last two remaining Lancaster bombers flying past our area.  Yesterday we went over to Kirmington in Lincolnshire as they were due to fly over the airport there at lunchtime.  Unfortunately, due to bad weather at RAF Coningsby, they were unable to take off.  Apologies for the quality of the photos.  We only had a matter of a few minutes to take them and my zoom is not very zoomy.

The late great Beatrice Printemps (Roberto's mother) used to sit at her bedroom window when she was a wee lass and count the Lancasters as they went out on their missions.  She told us that she once counted 600 in one night.

  1. Amazing aircraft. We were treated to a display by one of the few remaining Spitfires, right above our back garden at quite low level. No, it wasn't my birthday .... but he was actually putting on the display for the people who were at one of the annual events at Sandringham, the estate of which we border here in our village. I love the sound of the engines of these old planes, a bit like old cars and motorbikes, throaty and somehow sounding as if they mean business, do you know what I mean? If you do, poor you!!! Nice to see a post from you.. I check regularly.

  2. Hi Edwina. Yes, I love the sound of the old planes. It seems to take you back in time. I have been off the radar for a while. Busy trying to get holiday gear together - try buying summer stuff in Aug/Sept!! Nice to hear from you again.

  3. Yes, we went to see them at Eastbourne airshow with a friend whose parents worked on them during the war. It was a very moving experience.

    1. Hi Jean. Some of the stories are amazing aren't they? And some of the men were so young, early twenties and maybe younger, to have all that responsibility. So brave. They are proper heroes in my book.

      Thanks for dropping by Jean.

      Best wishes from Carol
